Climate, Vegetation, Soil, and Spectral Reflectance Patterns Across Zonal Vegetation Boundaries in Arctic Alaska
D.A. Walker, H.E. Epstein, J.G. Jia, E.J. Edwards, A. Moody
Abstract
Arctic plant community composition, structure and spectral properties show a clear response to summer temperature regimes, but this response is complicated by differences in soil parent materials. We characterized the plant communities, biomass, leaf-area-index, and spectral properties of the vegetation at Barrow, Atqasuk, Oumalik, and Ivotuk, along a transect of about 200 km traversing three of five vegetation subzones within the Arctic Zone and a mean-July-temperature gradient from about 3°C to 10°C. We sampled mesic zonal vegetation on acidic substrates along this transect and on equivalent nonacidic substrates where possible.
